Nigeria

  • Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a country in the south east of West Africa, with a coast at the Bight of Benin and the Gulf of Guinea. Nigeria is bordered by Benin, Cameroon, Chad, and Niger, it shares maritime borders with Equatorial Guinea, Ghana, and São Tomé and Príncipe.

  • With an area of 923,768 km² the country is almost four times the size of the UK or slightly more than twice the size of the U.S. state California. 

  • Nigeria has a population of 192 million people (UN est. in 2017), making it the seventh most populous country in the world. Capital city is Abuja, located in the center of the nation.

The Nigeria Internet Group was formed in 1995 after the first internet workshop organized by the Yaba College of Technology in collaboration with a number of organisations.  Nigeria Internet Group (NIG) was formed as a non-profit, non-governmental organisation with the primary aim and objective of promoting and facilitating access to the Internet in Nigeria.The Internet became a reality in Nigeria in the late 90's.Obafemi Awolowo University was the first university in Nigeria to have its own VSAT internet link

in 2012, Anonymous  attacked the government of Nigeria in a fight against corruption, poverty and theft. this attacks was against   the websites of Nigeria’s Finance, Foreign Affairs and Justice ministries as well as the Federal Capital Territory Administration. All four websites were down Friday afternoon.

in 2016, Anonymous repeated their attacks Nigeria government websites, including the Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration, the Ministry of Justice, Nigeria’s National Institute for Legislative Studies, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nigeria’s Customs Administration. They called on the government to purge the country of corruption and to rid the nation of poverty. they named their attacks "OPA Nigeria"

Anonymous utilized Distributied-Denial-of-Service (DDoS) to conduct their attacks. 

“Let them see that we have Anonymous Nigeria,” “… Let them know we are anonymous, we are legion, we do not forgive, we do not forget, they should have expected us.”

No legal action has been taken 

  • The Cybercrimes  Act, 2015 was enacted and entered into force on 15th May 2015. The purpose of the Act is also to promote cybersecurity and cybercrime prevention. 

 

  • The Act provides an effective, unified and comprehensive legal, regulatory and institutional framework for the prohibition, prevention, detection, prosecution and punishment of cybercrimes in Nigeria. This act also ensures the protection of critical national information infrastructure, and promotes cybersecurity and the protection of computer systems and networks, electronic communications, data and computer programs, intellectual property and privacy rights.
